Wildland Fire: On June 12 at approximately 11 a.m., a DEC docking crew noticed a fire on Floating Battery Island. Forest Ranger Donegan and a local fire department responded and quickly contained the fire. No structures or campers were threatened. The cause of the fire was a campfire that had not been properly extinguished. Campers are reminded to use a lot of water and make sure a fire is cold to the touch before leaving it unattended.

School Budget Passes / Board Remains Same Size

The Whitehall School Budget of $20.1 million was approved by the voters recently by a vote of 140 to 27.

The tax levy will only increase about $28,000 because state aid sees an increase also from this year’s budget.

The proposal to decrease the size of the school board ultimately failed because of an 86-86 tie vote.

All five candidates who filed petitions were elected to terms of varying length.

Next year’s school spending will be $20.1 million dollars for our district, which had a total enrollment of 672 K-12 students for the 2022-2023 school year.

Wilderness Rescue:: On May 25 at 10:44 a.m., Washington County requested Forest Ranger assistance with the search for an 85-year-old with dementia who walked away from her home. Her husband had last seen her at 9 p.m. the previous day. Ranger Boulton tracked the subject’s foot path through leaf litter and found her laying in the woods off an ATV trail at 12:01 p.m. The subject was disoriented and cold, but uninjured.

Thoughts on June

June was always a great month for us as children because it was the beginning of summer vacation. When you are a child, three months of summer vacation seems like an eternity with September light years away. We were always encouraged to read, play golf or tennis, and generally stay busy. Our mother wouldn’t allow any TV watching. Such good memories. Those childhood memories stay with you for a lifetime. Parents have it a bit harder. It’s a lot to manage with many children at home. Many of the grandparents and extended families in the community help with watching younger ones during the summer months.

Huletts has always been a place for families. It can be hard with all the summer commotion and activities, but the sounds of children always make it worthwhile. Hopefully 2023 will be a wonderful year of making good memories for all families. Young and old! Three months of happiness starts today.

Stec Constitutional Amendment Facilitating Camp Gabriels Sale Passes Senate

A constitutional amendment sponsored by Senator Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) to facilitate the sale of Camp Gabriels in the Town of Brighton today passed the state Senate. Senate bill S27 would enable the property to be sold or leased while ensuring the funds from the sale go toward forest preserve acquisition in the Adirondack Park. This is third consecutive year Stec’s legislation has passed the Senate.

“Camp Gabriels has laid dormant far too long and it’s had a negative impact on our local economy and quality of life,” Stec said. “If we’re serious about repurposing closed prisons, passing this constitutional amendment removes this financial liability from the state and generate the jobs, revenue and economic activity we’ve needed in Franklin County since Camp Gabriels was closed in 2009.

“In addition to the economic potential of a sale, this amendment ensures we continue forest preservation in the Adirondack Park for years to come,” he continued. “I’m hopeful that the Assembly will also take action this year, so we can get one step closer to bringing this amendment to voters and ensure this site is used to better our region.”
