Where were you 20 years ago today? Well July 1, 1989 was the day the Casino reopened after being closed for 16 years. That’s right. Between 1973 and 1989 the Casino was closed.
Al Kapusinski spearedheaded the effort and while the Casino has gone through a couple of reincarnations over the last few years, he was the one who got it going again in 1989.
Al is doing well and sends his regards to everyone. He’ll be back in Huletts in a few days. So when you see him this summer, tell him you’re enjoying the Casino and it’ll bring a smile to his face!

There will be a 50-50 raffle and door prizes. Promises to be a great evening.
Many thanks to all those who removed their boat trailers from behind the Casino and made arrangements to store them elsewhere.
However, we removed two trailers that went unclaimed and had sat behind the Casino for many years. If you know anything about either of these we’d appreciate it if you could let us know.
Trailer # 1 had no license plate but was in pretty good condition. Both wheels were in OK shape. It’s most distinguishing characteristic is that it says; “Highlander” on the front.
Trailer # 2 had a Vermont license plate but when the police called it in, they found it had been unregistered for 12 years.
If you know anything about either of these trailers please let us know. They have been moved to our gravel pit and we will be happy to return them to their owners.
We have been notified that the Casino is planning on having fresh Maine lobster on Friday night. Please call ahead for reservations: 518-499-0361. This is going to be good!
Lifeguards, Nicole Enny, Lindsay Martell and Elyse Putorti stand in front of the new donations box at the Washington County Beach.
The Washington county beach at Huletts Landing is now open for the 2009 season. The park is open 7 days a week from 8 a.m – 8 p.m. and the swimming beach is open from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
There are a few improvements for the 2009 season. Sand has been added to the volleyball court and a new donation box has been added to collect contributions.
The Washington county beach is the only free beach on Lake George in Washington county.
While the county cut funding this year, there are plans to hold a golf fundraiser and there will be some really neat T-shirts for sale which I got a preview of but which are not quite ready yet. I should have a copy of the design which I will post in the next few days.
So take a break and stop by for a swim or picnic. The Washington county beach is a hugh asset to the community and the county!
As I previously posted, the next Federation of Huletts Associations meeting will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 8:30 am in the new firehouse and is open to all.

Members of the Huletts Volunteer Fire Department conduct a drill at the end of County Route 6 on Tuesday, June 23rd.
We can report here that the regularly scheduled drill was concluded perfectly. Thanks to all the members who volunteer to protect our community!
Friends of Historic Huletts Landing (FHHL) is a volunteer organization dedicated to collecting and preserving the history of Huletts Landing and the surrounding area.
FHHL is working toward the opening of a “Gallery” in the old firehouse. The gallery will display reproduction photographs, art, and memorabilia of Huletts Landing and other local Lake George history.
Some simple renovations including interior painting, improving access and providing space for gathering behind the building, and addition of shelf and graphic display space are currently underway. FHHL anticipates a couple more work days before the “Gallery” will be open.
Huletts resident, Carl Sobeck, paints the inside of the old firehouse in anticipation of the new “Gallery” opening this summer.
Watch the message board and the Huletts Current for schedules.
Plumber John Manor and Huletts resident Conrad Peterson install a hookup to draw water and connect the fire department’s equipment in the event of an emergency.
Bravos to Conrad Peterson for spearheading the effort to make a connection for the fire department to draw water in an emergency from the existing Huletts water system.
Conrad donated the plumbing parts and plumber John Manor, from Manor & Manor Plumbing located in Whitehall, donated his time and labor to make this project happen.
While we won’t call it Hulett’s first fire hydrant just yet, it’s a positive contribution to the community. Our thanks go out to both Conrad and John for making this happen.
This is probably the best analysis I’ve seen on what is happening with Chrysler and its creditors. While this is a story with national implications, anything that makes lending money more riskier has the potential to effect local property values.

Joie and Maddie Mackell stand in front of the Huletts Soda Fountain. They want everyone to know they are now open for the 2009 summer season.
I recently had a chance to sit down with Joie and Maddie Mackell as they prepared to open for the summer. This summer will be their family’s 18th consecutive year running the Soda Fountain located on the side of the Huletts Casino.
When asked what they love about working in the Soda Fountain, they answered in unison, “We love the kids so much! They’re the reason we do this.”
While many people know them as the nice sisters who take such good care of the children wanting their favorite ice-cream, Joie is studying education in college and Maddie is pursuing a degree in business. “This is the perfect business for us to run, because both our career interests intersect at the Soda Fountain. There’s simply no better place to spend the summer than in Huletts.”
When asked what flavors of ice-cream are their top sellers, I was surprised to learn a few things about ice cream. “Our top selling flavor is Denali Moose Tracks but Cotton Candy is a big hit with the younger children,” said Joie. “Cookies vs. Peanut Butter is probably right there at # 3,” added Maddie.
In addition to ice cream, the sisters also sell a variety of candy and they even have handmade jewelry.
This summer the Soda Fountain will be open from 6 pm to 11 pm every evening.
So stop by and say hello and get your favorite flavor of ice cream at the same time!

Sam Knaus gives two thumbs up after finishing painting another side of the Casino.
We’re pleased to report that another side of the Casino has been completely repainted. Sam Knaus, who many may remember was the pizza chef in the Casino long ago when he was in high-school, finished painting another side today.
Sam is now a teacher in Virginia and has a painting business in the summer. However he has been painting the Casino one side at a time over the last couple of years when he has returned home with his wife and three children to visit his parents for the summer.
Good work Sam. Someone has to get up on the top of that ladder!
