Italian Adventures at the Casino: Thursday
Standing with a model of the statue of Laocoön and His Sons (Italian: Gruppo del Laocoonte), also called the Laocoön Group. The original is a monumental sculpture in marble now in the Vatican Museums, Rome. The statue is attributed by the Roman author Pliny the Elder to three sculptors from the island of Rhodes: Agesander, Athenodoros and Polydorus. It shows the Trojan priest Laocoön and his sons Antiphantes and Thymbraeus being strangled by sea serpents.

Friends Remember Blanche Meehan
A large crowd came out to the Huletts Casino on Saturday night to remember long-time Huletts resident, Blanche Meehan (1924-2010).
“Blanche may have lived in Florida and New York city, but Huletts Landing was always ‘home’ for her,” said friend, Larry Nash.
The large crowd had a fun evening sharing stories of Blanche after enjoying the beautiful day.
Blanche would have wanted it exactly that way!
New Business Opens on Top of Mountain
A new business, Sugar Loaf Mountain Antiques, recently opened on top of the mountain.
I recently stopped in to a new antique business which opened off of County Route 6 on top of the mountain. I spoke to the proprietor, Kathy Huntington, who also happens to be the new Town of Dresden historian.
“I’ve always loved history and antiques, so I thought it would be a good business,” said Kathy Huntington.
There are many interesting items for sale and Kathy is around on weekends or you can call her for an appointment. “I don’t have regular hours yet, but people can stop by on the weekend, or call for an appointment.”
The display area is very well organized and there are some really unique items.
A baby carriage from the 1930’s.
A large cash register used in a department store.
So if you’re looking for antiques or just want to browse, consider stopping in and supporting Sugar Loaf Mountain Antiques.
You can call the store at: 499-2969 or you can email Kathy at:

Beautiful Day for a Plane Ride
Marie Portela (left) and her daughter Pat (right) pose with Neal Vandorsten (center) in front of the airplane that took them on a sightseeing tour above Lake George (and Huletts Landing) on Sunday.
You couldn’t have asked for a better day to go for a plane ride.
After winning the ticket for a plane ride at the Huletts Landing Property Owners Civic Association’s golf course fundraiser on the July 4th weekend, Sunday was the day for Marie Portela and her daughter, Pat, to go on the actual ride.
The Huletts Casino donated the fun excursion and Neal Vandorsten, a licensed pilot, met Marie and Pat at the Glens Falls airport and took the two happy participants on the ride.
“It was a perfect day and we got some great views in of Lake George,” said pilot, Neal Vandorsten.
A beautiful view of the Sagamore hotel.
When asked what she thought about the day, Marie Portela remarked; “It was awesome! Neal is a great pilot.”

Ridge Near Deer’s Leap Collapses
Looking directly across Lake George from Huletts, it appeared that something looked different this summer.
Then I realized something was different. Sometime since the summer of 2010, a ridge very close to Deer’s Leap collapsed and fell down the mountain.
Here is a view from the middle of Lake George with the area circled in red.
Here is a view by boat from closer in, looking up. You can see the outcropping left is a different color.
Looks like it wiped out some trees as it fell.
Rocks and boulders litter the area underneath.

Whitehall School, Vandals & Ignorant Despoil Playground
Recently a reader of the Huletts Current stopped by the playground at the Whitehall school district and emailed me these photographs. As you can see for yourself, the playground was in poor condition due to ignorance and vandalism.
A used, dirty diaper was left rotting in the sun, with garbage littered nearby. This was in clear eyesight from the school.
A used, dirty diaper and garbage were found littering the Whitehall’s school playground.
A slide in the playground was found vandalized and our reader pointed out that the plastic is really hard – it’s meant to stand up to kids running up it, etc. The only way this would get smashed would be if someone took a very large rock, brick, etc., and really put some force into deliberately breaking it – which seems to be what happened.
A hard plastic children’s slide was found bashed in most likely by a rock or hard object.
The slide, which is hollow, was filled with water from the rain, attracting bugs and mosquitoes.
The perimeter of the school is full of security cameras. It would be interesting to know if the high tech surveillance was capable of catching the culprits of this desecration of school property. (And those cameras did not come cheap.)
I think what is most frustrating to the taxpayers of the district, is that not only do we feel we are being overtaxed, but it also seems that the administration is very cavalier in protecting the investments that the taxpayers do make. Sadly, this is a perfect illustration of how the playground is cared for by the school and thought of by some of the people using it.
