Lincoln Mayorga

For many years, Lincoln enjoyed one of the busiest studio careers in Hollywood. He was the staff pianist for Walt Disney Studios and contributed to the soundtracks of such motion pictures as Chinatown, Pete’s Dragon, The Competition, The Rose, and Ragtime. As pianist, arranger, and conductor, Lincoln made many recordings with such artists as Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand. Vikki Carr, Mel Torme, Phil Ochs, Andy Williams, Frank Zappa. and Quincy Jones.

Findlay Cockrell

Findlay Cockrell, is a retired professor of music at SUNY Albany, a teacher, pianist and mentor. Findlay attended Harvard and the Juilliard School (BS, MS), and has taught at Albany for almost 50 years. Those in the Capital District have enjoyed his recitals (especially the Noon Concert series), chamber music, and performances with the Albany Symphony and other local orchestras. Findlay was also the first performing artist to play at the EGG (The Empire State theater of performing arts in Albany). He was also guest soloist with the San Francisco Symphony under Arthur Fiedler, and a highlight of his career were guest solo performances in Tula, Russia and in Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow with the noted Ossipov Russian Instrumental Orchestra.

A native of California, and a part time resident of the Napa Valley, Findlay has his own amphitheater there for local concerts. This September and November he will be giving two concerts at the request of Earlham College in Indiana for the opening of their new arts center.

Many thanks to Carol Putnam for planning this event and notifying me.

HLVFD’s Dual Event: “Santa’s Visit” and “Fire House Re-dedication”

The Huletts Landing Fire House was dedicated to Arthur Borin this past Saturday.

On Saturday, the Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Department conducted dual events …”Santa comes to Huletts” and the “Re-dedication of the Firehouse” to the Company’s former President, the late Arthur (Art) Borin.

The Huletts Landing community was treated to an outstanding performance of “Santa” (played by one of HLVFD fire fighter members..John Colligan), who toured the Landing, on top of one of the Company’s fire trucks, heralding all of the children to come to the Fire House to personally visit with Santa plus sharing in games, goodies, face painting and lots more fun.

Obviously Santa’s invitation was well received as evidenced by the large turnout of happy faces that joined in the fun at the firehouse. Later during the activities the crowd was asked to join in the re-dedication ceremony conducted by HLVFD President, Luke Smith and Fire Chief Jay Vander Plaat in assisting Mrs. Carol Borin in uncovering the beautiful bronze plaque to her late husband’s memory. Mrs. Borin eloquently addressed the crowd thanking the Fire Company for this honor. Carol was accompanied by many members of the Borin family for the picture taking activities that followed, thus ending quite a remarkable day of both excitement and historical memory for our Huletts Landing families.

Dresden Has a Website: www.TownOfDresdenNY.com

A screenshot of Dresden’s new website.

Dresden officially entered the digital age this past Monday with the launching of the new town website: http://www.TownOfDresdenNY.com

The site, which has been in the works for a few months, has descriptions of popular places to visit in the town, a list of town officials with contact information, a meetings page to keep people informed of upcoming meetings, as well as assessment information and minutes of town meetings. It is expected that the site will continue to grow in the future. Hopes include historical information about areas of the town.

Supervisor George Gang said at Monday’s town board meeting; “When I was elected, this was one of my priorities. It’s great to have this up and running. We will expand on it in the future but it’s now live.”

LGA Nuisance Canada Geese Lakewide Survey

Canadian geese are a growing problem on Lake George. (Photo – Lake George Association.)

Nuisance resident Canada geese are a growing problem on the Lake for private properties and the Lake’s water quality. Just 1 goose can produce about 1 lb of droppings per day! Droppings contain bacteria and nutrients including phosphorus, both of which can impact water quality. Unfortunately, there often isn’t much that can be done to help homeowners with the problem other than suggest a shoreline buffer or some other goose deterrent ideas.

However, the Lake George Association hasn’t given up on addressing this issue over the years – and are happy to be able to tell you that now they are working with USDA/APHIS Wildlife Services staff to conduct a lake-wide survey of the Canada Goose population on Lake George this month. A census of the current population is the first step in moving forward with a lake-wide management plan.

It is a big lake – so the LGA needs your help! They know that some areas on the lake are prone to more goose problems than others. If you know of an area (like your front lawn) where the geese are constantly hanging out – they would like to know about it. This info will greatly help them get a more accurate picture of the goose population on the Lake during their survey.

The LGA would like to know:
1. where you see the geese (address and description from the water would be good since we will be on a boat to conduct the survey),
2. about how many geese are in the flock,
3.and how frequently they are there (are they always in the same place every day – do they have a daily routine?, etc) .

Please email this info to Emily at edebolt@lakegeorgeassociation.org or call the office at 518-668-3558 by Monday August 18th.

See the DEC handout on geese here.

Huletts Landing Post Office to Remain Open

The Huletts Landing Post Office will remain open with realigned hours

Update/Correction 8/12/14

While the survey numbers below were presented at the meeting, the actual vote totals were: out of 136 questionnaires returned, 133 or 98% voted for realigned hours, 3 made no selection. My original numbers – while presented at the meeting by the Postal Service – were wrong.

Postal service officials announced today near the steps of the Huletts Landing Post Office that the Huletts Post Office will remain open, but have its hours reduced to four hours per day. The start date for these new hours has yet to be determined, but will most likely begin in early 2015.

Residents had been asked to submit their preferences and, today, officials from the postal service announced the results.

Out of 231 questionnaires sent out, 136 total responses were received back, with 98 votes to keep the Post Office open with reduced hours. Saturday hours will not change.

The postal service staff suggested that the new hours be 9:00 am to 1:00 pm but a majority of the nearly 30 local residents in attendance preferred the hours of 10:30 am to 2:30 pm.

The new hours will not be finalized at this time.

Because of pension costs, every post office’s hours will be reevaluated every year. Please be sure to continue to buy your stamps and postage in Huletts Landing.

State Works on Drainage Near 22 & 6 Intersection

The state has been doing some work on the culvert system that runs under Route 22 near the intersection with County Route 6.

When you turn onto County Route 6 from Route 22, you can barely see the drainage work being done by the state. I stopped recently and shot these pictures. The work will be going on for a few more weeks.

The area takes runoff from the side of the mountain and channels it under Route 22.

Saturday August 9th: Wooden Sailboat Lecture

Re-making History: The Sound Inter Club Restorations and Reintroduction to Lake George. – August 9, Saturday, 7:30 pm, MGM Church

The fast and powerful 1926 Sound Inter Club sailboats were raced and sailed first on Long Island Sound, but as many as 10 of them were brought to Lake George in the late 1930s and 40s, where they were enjoyed for decades by the rich and glamorous on Lake George. Of the 28 ever built, only five remain today. Wooden boat builder Reuben Smith tells the story of the painstaking, careful restoration of two of these boats, as well as the historic reintroduction of the class to Lake George.

Volunteer Fire Department News

Huletts Fire Chief, Jay VanderPlatt, passed along two stories this past week. File both of these under: Things That Make Huletts A Great Place.

Tony Dingman of Indian Bay, had his son Scott here with his family for a two week vacation. Scott is a Flight Paramedic from North Carolina. During his brief stay, he responded to 4 of our emergency calls. He responded first to a visiting 76 year old woman, who fell backward down a flight of stairs. She had 2 broken wrists, 1 broken elbow, 3 broken ribs, and a very deep gash on her head. Scott responded because his dad is a volunteer fireman here in the landing and because of a sense of community; giving back where he spent his summers growing up. Thank you Scott, for stepping up to the plate. Scott was on vacation but placed the needs of the situation first.

On Saturday July 26, 2014, 25 people attended CPR training and re-certification at the fire house for all the firefighters.

On Friday Aug 1, 2014, Bill Clough, a volunteer firefighter for the Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Co., was taking his wife Betty out to dinner at the Kings Inn Restaurant in Port Henry. During dinner, Bill witnessed a man collapse at the restaurant. Bill immediately determined the absence of a pulse and breathing and commenced CPR. This man’s life was saved with Bill’s training and effort. The benefits of the training have reached far beyond our community.

Reminder: The Huletts Landing Open House “Christmas in August” is Saturday, Aug. 16th from 3pm to 5pm at the fire house. Santa will be present and there will be ice cream and gift bags, face painting and candy canes for kids. At 4pm there will be the dedication of a plaque honoring Arthur Borin, past President of the Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Department.

Community Supper This Week

This summer’s Community Supper will take place at the Washington County Pavilion this Wednesday, August 6th at 6 PM.

Every family that attends brings a large covered dish or salad and their own cutlery and beverage of their choice. The Ladies Church Guild will be sponsoring the event and providing lemonade, ice tea and dessert. There will be entertainment provided by The Samantha Emmitt Trio.

Hope to see you there!!

Last Chance to Keep the Huletts Landing Post Office Open

If you receive mail in Huletts Landing, July 28th is the last day to have your survey results postmarked for the Post Plan Survey

If you have no idea what I am talking about, please review the post here, if you are unfamiliar with this issue.

Please note that voting for option 1, keeping the Huletts Post Office open with reduced weekday window service options, is the only option that will keep the Huletts Post Office open. Voting for any of the other options will be a vote to close the Huletts Post Office.

Here is a copy of the survey you should have received if you have a mailing address in Huletts Landing (with option one checked). Please note that option one is the correct one to choose, if you want to see the Huletts Landing Post Office remain open.

This will be your only opportunity to make your voice heard on this issue. Please vote wisely by July 28th!
