Calling all Sports Fans – Please Help

With the Superbowl behind us, I am working on a post regarding individuals involved in sports with a connection to Huletts or the local area. Now I know that we have many fans of various professional teams, but what I’m looking for is the local connection.

Do we have any people who live in or visit Huletts who play for a college team? Do we have anyone who visits or who stays in Huletts with a connection to a certain sport? It’s always more fun to root for a team or person who has a local connection and I would like to spotlight those people. Do we have any retired athletes, either amateur or professional, who would like to share their sporting stories? So if you know a person with a certain unique connection to a team and/or an athlete, no matter how small the connection to the Landing, I would appreciate you dropping me a note.

Do you know the former professional Quarterback who visited the Casino? Please consider letting me know any connection you are aware of by dropping me an email or by using the “contact us” page. I hope to finish this in the next two weeks and I want to be sure I have as many as possible. Thanks in advance for sharing.

Dead Tree Along Third Fairway Removed

Dead limbs can be see scattered along the ground under a tree that was recently cut down.

The tree pictured above, which stood along the third fairway of the golf course, was recently cut down. Limbs were perpetually falling off the tree and the assessment was that it was dead and rotted throughout, so it was taken down before someone got hurt.

You can see from the photo that this winter has been really mild in Huletts, so far, with almost no snow and the Lake looking more and more like it will skip the freeze this year.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Dresden Town Resident,

This letter is to inform you that the Dresden Town Board has recently discussed the condition of the current Veterans Plaque. We decided that the plaque needs to be updated and replaced. We have recently formed a committee to plan the replacement/upgrade of the existing Veterans Memorial at the Dresden Town Hall. We have established the following qualification must be met in order to be placed on the new plaque.

• Must be a resident of the town of Dresden for at least 10 years.
• Must have 180 uninterrupted days of Federal Service. (excluding boot camp and technical school)
• Must provide proof of service with a DD214 (except veterans who are currently serving). An honorable discharge is required.

If you or a family member qualify or if you have any questions or ideas, please contact D. Patrick Greenough (518-499-1899) or F. Chet Foster (518-499-2160).

We are accepting donations, which are non tax deductible for this endeavor and may be sent to: Town of Dresden Box 16 Clemons, NY 12819 in care of George Gang.

Sincerely,

Veterans Plaque Committee

Top News Story of Huletts: 2015

A “road closed” / detour sign was in place for three months as the Eichlerville bridge was worked on in 2015.

Since I’ve been writing here on the Huletts Current, I’ve gotten in the habit of recapping at the end of the year what I consider to be the top news story of Huletts Landing from the past year. This is sometimes obvious, sometimes it is not.

This year, the biggest “story,” in my opinion, was the rebuilding of the “Eichlerville” bridge which took a number of months, and the repaving of County Route 6. In other words, the bridge and roads took center stage in 2015. I realized I took the most pictures of those events during 2015, many of which I post here. While many things happened in Huletts during 2015, the work on the bridge and roads was indeed significant.

So for 2015, I’ve selected the the rebuilding of the “Eichlerville” bridge, and the repaving of County Route 6 (which were actually two different events but tremendously significant to travel throughout the community) as the: Top News Story of Huletts for 2015.

The abutments from the “old” bridge were in rough shape after over 100 years of use.

The new abutments were brought in individually and joined on site.

Great care was taken to protect the environment as the new bridge was constructed.

Work progressed slowly but methodically.

The cross pieces were brought in near the end.

Finally, the bridge had to be joined to the existing private road.

The “new” Eichlerville bridge as it looked upon completion.

Also in 2015, Washington County repaved County Route 6 right past the Huletts Post Office.

This work was significant and also much needed.

Merry Christmas

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy holiday season.

Pictures from the 2015 Dresden Christmas Party

Santa Claus stopped by this year’s Dresden Christmas party.

The children of Dresden were treated to a town-wide Christmas party on Saturday December 19th, in the Dresden Town hall. Over 60 people attended.

A very special thank you to Linda Barber – Every year, Linda donates her time to help Santa send out the invitations, buy and wrap the presents, set up the refreshment table and so much more, so all the children in the Town can have a wonderful party!!!

Below are some pictures from the event.

Santa stopped by on his way from the north pole. (Looking very much like Town Councilman John Barber.)

Town Supervisor, George Gang (who was very nice this year), introduced Santa.

All children who attended received a present.

Justice of the Peace, the Honorable Jack Eggleston reading the “Night Before Christmas” to the children.

Surprises awaited all the children.

A fun day was had by all.

Over 60 people attended.

Delicious food was available for all.

Many thanks to Sue Foster Ives for providing the above photos. (Click to see full-scale.)

As Christmas draws near and you’re sending all those cards and packages, please remember to support the Huletts Post Office. It’s free and incredibly easy. The order form comes in a return postage paid envelope and the stamps arrive at your door within a few days. It’s that simple and it helps.

If you don’t have a pre-addressed envelope, you can just write your order on a piece of paper and mail a check to:

Pictures from the 2015 Huletts Christmas Party

The Huletts firehouse as it looked for the 2015 Christmas party on Saturday night.

The Huletts Landing community was treated to another spectacular Christmas gala celebration on Saturday evening, December 5th, at the Huletts Landing firehouse.

The firehouse was, once again, magically transformed into a wonderfully decorated Christmas venue with twinkling trees, bright lights, holiday music and all things shinny and bright. The event saw a new record attendance, which included HLVFC members and their families, friends and neighbors of the Landing, invited firefighters, first responders and EMT members from neighboring communities who had frequently answered the call this year for aid and assistance during emergencies in Huletts Landing, and Dresden Town Supervisor, George Gang.

Many thanks to HLVFC President John DeLucia, Fire Chief Jay VanderPlaat and the outstanding support team of “Santa’s Helpers” that planned and carried out all of the activities that made this an enjoyable night of great fun and entertainment. The Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Company would like to extend its sincerest thanks and appreciation to its valued supporters in the community for their very generous response to the Company’s fund drive this year, and sends along it’s best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2016.

Correction: John DeLucia is the current President of HLVFC. Mr. DeLucia took over for Luke Smith this past October. I wrongly cited Mr. Smith as President of the HLVFC in my original post. My apologies for the mistake.

Update on Movie Filmed Locally in 2014

The producers and film crew making an independent short movie in and around Huletts Landing in April 2014 (seen here), recently provided an update on the movie.

In 2014, a film crew and actors descended on Huletts Landing and Whitehall, where they shot an independent short movie. I’m happy to report that after a year and a half of editing, color correcting, and sound design, the film is almost finished. As it stands, it’ll be completed by the end of 2015 and I’ll have more updates for everyone then.

Until then, “that’s a wrap!”
