2013 Palm Sunday

Entry Into Jerusalem, Pedro Orrente, 1620

Jesus proceeded on his journey up to Jerusalem.
As he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany
at the place called the Mount of Olives,
he sent two of his disciples.
He said, “Go into the village opposite you,
and as you enter it you will find a colt tethered
on which no one has ever sat.
Untie it and bring it here.
And if anyone should ask you,
‘Why are you untying it?’
you will answer,
‘The Master has need of it.’”
So those who had been sent went off
and found everything just as he had told them.
And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them,
“Why are you untying this colt?”
They answered,
“The Master has need of it.”
So they brought it to Jesus,
threw their cloaks over the colt,
and helped Jesus to mount.
As he rode along,
the people were spreading their cloaks on the road;
and now as he was approaching the slope of the Mount of Olives,
the whole multitude of his disciples
began to praise God aloud with joy
for all the mighty deeds they had seen.
They proclaimed:
“Blessed is the king who comes
in the name of the Lord.
Peace in heaven
and glory in the highest.”
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,
“Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
He said in reply,
“I tell you, if they keep silent,
the stones will cry out!”

Dresden Girl Raising Money For Inspiring Trip

Recently, I received this letter from Sadie Sheldrick.

Sadie is a eleven years old and is an “A” student in the 5th grade. She lives in Dresden with her family and has recently been selected to be a People to People Student Ambassador to the Canadian West.

For those unfamiliar with the People to People Ambassador Program, President Eisenhower in 1956 proposed a peaceful solution for a war-ravaged world. That solution? Give everyday citizens of different countries the opportunity to meet and get to know each other, and the result will be understanding, friendship, and lasting peace. Out of this vision came the inspiration for People to People Ambassador Programs.

Sadie is trying to raise money to be able to pay for her trip, which will be entirely financed through private donations. As you can read in her letter linked to above, she has been collecting bottles and cans, recycling cell phones, and reaching out to local residents who would consider supporting her. In April, her family will be having a “Basket Party” in support of her.

I spoke to Sadie on the phone recently and have already made a donation to her effort. She asked me if I could post her letter on the Huletts Current, which I am more than happy to do. Perhaps you will consider donating to Sadie also. She is a young lady, with a lot of motivation, who would like to bring the hospitality of our small town to the citizens of the Canadian West.

Now For Some History: Febuary 4, 1973

“Winter is with us; raw, cold, mild, all the time, snow all around us, lake frozen with a big crack in the ice right through the middle from Rogers Rock to Bolton Landing. It broke open with a big boom heard all around us; Whitehall, Fair Haven, even Glens Falls. About every day a storm, rain, freezing and everything, or more snow. We just try to get by till spring.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 2013

“I’ve seen too much hate to want to hate, myself, and every time I see it, I say to myself, hate is too great a burden to bear. Somehow we must be able to stand up against our most bitter opponents and say: We shall match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering. We will meet your physical force with soul force. Do to us what you will and we will still love you…. But be assured that we’ll wear you down by our capacity to suffer, and one day we will win our freedom. We will not only win freedom for ourselves; we will appeal to your heart and conscience that we will win you in the process, and our victory will be a double victory.”

Benefit Basket Party for Pam Hobus’ Brother, Michael Kennedy

I received this announcement from Pam Hobus. Pam is the wife of Dresden Highway Superintendent, Rick Hobus. Pam’s brother, Michael Kennedy, has been courageously battling cancer and the community is hosting a benefit basket party for him on February 9th. Even if you can’t attend, please consider making a donation. The Hobus and Kennedy families have done much for both Dresden and Whitehall, and they appreciate your generosity and concern as Michael continues his fight.

Adios 2012

Here’s wishing everyone a very healthy and joyous 2013.

I saw this in a church bulletin and thought it worth sharing.

It is also time for New Year’s resolutions. In light of the recent tragedy in Newtown, CT, can we examine our consciences daily as to aggressive words/actions; can we consider watching or supporting less violence on television/in the movies; can we look for things we might be doing that tacitly encourages aggression; and can we resolve to treat each other with the respect that each child of God deserves?
