Five Years Old

Well, here it is November 9, 2013 which is the day I celebrate the “birthday” of the Huletts Current. It has been exactly five years since my first post in 2008. The news ebbs and flows but I’ve been happy to share the “goings on” around town with you for the last five years.

So thank you for continuing to read the Huletts Current and know I appreciate sharing the “news” with you. Hopefully you’ve learned a thing or two while checking in periodically. It seems like the pictures, history, and other short items are informative also, because I get comments on those too.

As is my custom, here are the most read posts from the past year.

2.) Arthur Borin, R.I.P.

Assemblyman Dan Stec (R,C,I – Queensbury) and Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently honored Keene Valley resident Ron Konowitz with an Emergency Preparedness Award during the governor’s Conference on Emergency Preparedness. The award was given in recognition of Konowitz’s extraordinary courage and dedication as a volunteer firefighter in service of our communities.

“When times were tough and things were at their worst, Ron Konowitz was at his best,” said Stec. “Ron was on the frontline as a volunteer firefighter and his courage and dedication to helping others has proven crucial not only in helping our friends and neighbors recover in the wake of Hurricane Irene, but in saving the lives of others. It was an honor to present him with an award recognizing his service to our communities and on behalf of the entire 114th District, I thank him.”

What Are You Doing This Off-Season?

No, I’m not in Pittsburgh. However, I did receive this shot from my nephew who is at today’s game. It made me think that I’m going to start a new series of posts entitled, What are you doing this off-season?

If you’re some place fun or interesting, send me a picture, and I might post it. I know lots of people who go interesting places and see fun events when they’re not in Huletts. So if you’re doing something fun this off-season, send me a picture and let your friends see the excitement here on the Huletts Current.

Thanks very much George for your post on Flight 93.

I would like to cc you on my post 9-11-01 annual tribute to my high school (Holy Cross HS in Flushing, NY) Chaplain:

God Bless Father Francis Grogan. I was very fortunate to have known Father Frank while he served as my Holy Cross High School’s Chaplain. He was a very kind, intelligent and caring man and he is greatly missed every day since 9-11-01. Father Frank was on United Airlines Fight 175, the plane which Terrorists crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. He and sixteen Holy Cross High School Alumni died that day in New York City. God Bless them all…

Take care and thanks for all of your great posts!

I am sorry to report that Arthur Borin, Town Councilman for the town of Dresden and President of the Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Department, died last night.

“Art” as he was known to his friends, was instrumental in having the new firehouse built in Huletts and bringing in the AT&T cell phone tower. He served on the Dresden Town Board for many years and worked in countless ways to make the community a better place.

Funeral arrangements are not available at this time.

“May God support us all the day long, till the shades lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in His mercy may He give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest and peace at the last.”

Surprise Birthday Party Held for Mrs. Aiken

Mrs. Catherine Aiken (center) at a surprise birthday party held for her, with her children (from left to right); Carl, Marybeth, Cathy and Stephanie.

Longtime Huletts resident, Catherine Aiken, was “totally surprised” by a birthday celebration held in her honor at the Fair Haven Inn on Sunday.

Planned by her children, and attended by many of her friends from Huletts, Mrs. Aiken did not suspect what was waiting for her as she arrived. “I’m going to get you,” is what she said to her children once she found out the festivities were for her.

Mrs. Aiken spoke to those gathered about her love for them and the community that many call home. “You are all so special to me,” said Mrs. Aiken. “This means more than you can all know.”

Congratulations and happy birthday to Mrs. Aiken!

Kerry A. McNelis Memorial Draws Large Crowd of Family and Friends

Family and friends came out to celebrate the life of Kerry A. McNelis on Saturday, July 27th. Kerry lost her courageous battle with cancer during the past year but her family and friends wanted to remember her with a day that celebrated her remarkable spirit.

The day, appropriately entitled: Live, Laugh & Love, Leave No Doubt! began with a Memorial Lands End Walk and concluded in the Huletts Casino with pictures and testimonials of Kerry and a life well-lived. Her large extended family and her neighbors throughout Huletts Landing paid tribute to a remarkable woman who made an unforgettable impact on those who knew her.

The large crowd who attended left no doubt that Kerry McNelis lived, laughed and loved well, while touching the hearts of many.

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Luke Smith

Congratulations to Luke Smith and Melissa Donaldson who were married on Saturday at the Whitehall Athletic Club.

Many relatives and friends of the large Smith and Donaldson families were able to attend. The happy couple exchanged their vows from the balcony overlooking the main hall of the Whitehall Athletic Club and a lively and fun reception followed. The dance floor was filled with members of the bridal party, family and friends.

The sun shined brightly throughout the afternoon and the after-party continued into the night at the Huletts Casino where the couple made a spectacular entrance by golf cart.

Many wishes for a happy and healthy future go out to the Smith’s as they continue their lives together.

Berry/Clayton Wedding Takes Place in Huletts

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Clayton arrive at the Huletts Casino for their reception after getting married in the Mountain Grove Memorial Church on Saturday.

Sometimes dreams do come true.

Growing up, Annie Berry always wanted to get married in Huletts. Well that’s what happened on Saturday as she and Tommy Clayton were married in the Mountain Grove Memorial Church. Helen Marie Sunkenberg officiated at the wedding ceremony and the reception followed in the Casino.

It was a joyous ceremony and lively reception. The band “Grand Central Station” delighted the crowd throughout the evening and the bride’s entire family did a patriotic rendition of the song, God Bless America.

It was a day of family, friends, good times, and a lot of love. It was a Huletts day through and through.

The bride’s parents, Ann and Doug Berry, rejoice in their daughter’s big day.

The bride’s grandfather, Bill Harriman, stands with a guest during the reception.

Guests enjoyed the beautiful weather outside.

A fun reminder at the entrance of the Casino.

The inside of the Casino was decorated to perfection.

Some of the “flowers” were made out of colored paper.

A fun idea: leave a thumbprint and your name on the “guest” tree.

Flip-flops kept the dance party going.

The band, Grand Central Station, rocked the crowd.
