Seven Years Old

Well, here it is another November 9th which is the day I celebrate the “birthday” of the Huletts Current. It’s now been exactly seven years since my first post in 2008.

I love hearing from everyone with story ideas, news and community “goings-on.” It gets a little slow during the winter and when I’m busy with other things I can’t update the blog as much as I would like. However, I enjoy hearing from you and sharing your thoughts and pictures about Huletts. Here is an email I recently received which demonstrates how certain posts trigger other memories.

I want to thank you for having this blog available to read. My family (parents and 6 kids) spent 2 weeks every summer from about 1962 to around 1980 at Huletts Landing. We stayed in the cottage called DelNoce. We were there the year the Mohican sank. Mr. Eichler asked all the Dad’s to drive the folks from the ship over the mountain to Whitehall (It was a church party). My Dad tells stories about how much fun these folks were as he drove them to Whitehall.

Thanks again,
Kevin Burns

As is my custom, here are the most read posts from the past year.

1.) Eichlerville Bridge Opens
2.) Pictures from the Huletts Christmas Party
3.) The Ride of My Life
4.) Man Finds Unique Hulett Treasure
5.) 1915 – 2015 Hulett Hotel Fire Anniversary: Judge Erskine C. Rogers
6.) Former Vietnam POW Proudly Wears Whitehall Shirt
7.) Interview with Michael Rocque: Candidate for School Board
8.) Pictures from Dresden’s Christmas Party
9.) Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21) Officially Sworn In
10.) An Interview with Adirondack Artist, Sandra Hildreth

I was even surprised that some of these stories were linked to by other media outlets.

So thanks again for reading and now onto year eight!!

For All New York Baseball Fans

California Rep. Adam Schiff and New York Rep. Steve Israel made a wager on the Mets-Dodgers NLDS. Schiff wagered gourmet popcorn from California while Israel wagered New York bagels. The loser was also required to make a one minute speech on the House Floor praising the winning team.

The NY Mets went on to beat the Dodgers in five games. Schiff made good on losing the bet by singing “Meet the Mets” on Friday afternoon.

For all of our Mets fans – enjoy!

Columbus Day Weekend Recap

The children’s costume parade has become an annual tradition during the Columbus Day weekend.

Many thanks to all those volunteers who made the Columbus Day weekend so spectacular. From the children’s parade, the festivities in the Casino, to the birthday party for Ed and all the other “goings-on” around the Landing, this was certainly a Columbus Day to remember. The colors just began getting vibrant as the weekend ended. So please consider this a heartfelt goodbye until we see each other again in 2016! Please stay healthy as the weather starts getting colder.

The trees on top of the mountain reflect autumn’s brilliance.

Shhhhhhhh its a Surprise

We will have a surprise birthday party for Ed in the Casino on Saturday.

Everyone is welcome to stop by the Casino on Saturday afternoon around 1:00 pm for a surprise birthday for Ed.

Please do not say anything to him so that it will be a surprise.

Ed’s birthday is a big one this year – involving an 8 and a 0, but you’d never know it by how hard he works!

Please stop by and wish him well!!

Looking for Volunteers

Looking for some volunteers who aren’t scared to act scary for the first ever haunted Casino on Saturday after the children’s parade.

Doctor and nurse, severed head, multiple zombies and Dracula. The characters can be played in shifts. No need to be there the entire 2 hours.

It will be fun. If interested, see Andrew & Amanda at the Casino.

Trekonderoga in Ticonderoga September 4th & 5th

A re-creation of the Star Trek Enterprise bridge is one of the things tickets can be purchased for at a fan inspired Star Trek conference that will take place this upcoming weekend in Ticonderoga.

The first Star Trek event in Ticonderoga (billed as Trekonderoga) will take place over the Labor Day weekend.

Original Star Trek guest stars from the 1960’s show visiting the event include Sally Kellerman (second Star Trek pilot), Don Marshall (Lt. Boma in the episode “The Galileo Seven”), Barbara Luna (Marlena Moreau in the all-time classic episode “Mirror, Mirror”), Louise Sorel (Rayna Kapec in “Requiem for Methuselah”) and Sean Kenney (Captain Christopher Pike in the two-part Star Trek episode, “The Menagerie”).

Also, the original 1966 Batmobile will make an appearance in Ticonderoga on Saturday, September 5th only.

The “Star Trek” fan fest was the idea of James Cawley, a Ticonderoga native and Elvis Presley impersonator. The entire Enterprise set from the original show has been recreated in a building in Ticonderoga to use in production of fan created web episodes of the beloved show.

Consider buying some tickets and heading to Ticonderoga for a great idea this upcoming weekend!

The Ride of My Life

The interior of a classic 1978 Taylor SJ jet propelled boat.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to be taken for a ride in a 500 HP 1978 Taylor SJ jet propelled boat. It belongs to some guests of ours and, even after all these years, has only approximately 20 hours on the engine.

The owner told me he only takes it out every few years for a couple of days at a time. The rest of the time, he keeps it locked away in storage.

The boat’s throttle is actually a “gas” pedal on the floor.

We took the boat out in the early evening when the lake was flat. You’re only a few inches above the water, which I tried to capture in the picture below.

The boat has an extremely low center of gravity, sitting just inches above the water.

As we started to speed up, not having a windshield added to the overall experience of the ride. The rooster tail, which is caused by the jet pump, was impressive indeed. As we passed some island campers, we were greeted by claps and cheers.

The jet pump’s rooster tail was impressive indeed.

I was holding on for my life at this point. Although, my host told me he was always below the speed limit! After only about 5 minutes, what is left of my hair was curled up from my forehead straight back. We returned to the dock, where I was able to look at the engine.

The engine was an impressive 500 HP.

All in all, it was one of the most impressive rides I have ever taken on Lake George. The boat has now gone away for another couple of years, but I wanted to share my experience and pictures with the readers of the Huletts Current.
