Eichlerville Bridge Opens

The Eichlerville bridge opened on Saturday, August 1st.

After months of hard work, the Eichlerville bridge opened to vehicular traffic on the afternoon of Saturday, August 1st.

The prior bridge, which had been in place for almost 100 years, had outlived its usefulness and was becoming unusable for heavier vehicles.

Many thanks go out to Peter Spiess, Pat Smith, Bill Davidow, Patrick Keenan and the membership of the Huletts Landing Property Owners Civic Association for making this important improvement happen.

Saturday Quote

“One of the strangest faculties of the Christian religion, and one of the hardest to understand, is the power of giving direction and consolation to everyone who has recourse to her, in no matter what circumstances, at no matter what time. If there is a remedy for what is past, she prescribes it, and gives us the vision and strength to carry it out. If there is no remedy, she shows us how to make a literal reality of the proverbial expression ‘to make a virtue of necessity’. She teaches us to continue wisely in the course we entered upon out of frivolity. She chastens our heart to accept gladly that which is imposed on us by tyranny, she gives a reckless but irrevocable choice all the sanctity, all the wisdom, all the – let us say it – all the joyful happiness of a true vocation. She is a great road, which a man may find after wandering in the most tangled labyrinth, amid the most dangerous precipices, and once he has taken one stride along it, he can walk on safely and gladly, and be sure of a happy end to his journey.”

Work on Eichlerville Bridge Progresses

While the Eichlerville bridge is still closed, work progressed steadily this week.

The cross pieces were lowered into place by a crane on Monday.

The deck was joined to the two side abutments.

The guardrails were put in place on Wednesday.

The bridge is still not open. However, hopefully, it will be completed soon!

LGPC’s Recreation Study

The Lake George Park Commission is conducting a Recreation Study during the summer of 2015. The Town of Dresden has posted the LGPC’s flyer about this on their website.

The LGPC is looking for people on the lake who want to share their recreational experience. They will be able to use their Smart phone to instantly take the survey or they can go to the Park Commission website.

The Commission is seeking all visitors and those who do not have to register their boats – kayakers, sailboats, parasailers, rental boaters, etc. to fill out a survey.

Those with registered docks and boats will get their survey via email in August.

The Huletts Landing Ladies’ Guild Fundraiser for Community Outreach event, held at the Washington County Park on the evening of July 17th, was a great success and exceeded all expectations.

Many thanks to the ladies of that committee for their teamwork in crafting and creating such an enjoyable gathering. The proceeds received from this gala event will benefit the organization’s community outreach program.

Pictured below are some of the Huletts Landing residents who attended. Using the old cliche – ”A picture is worth a thousand words” – it should be obvious that a good time was had by all. The Ladies Guild extend their sincerest appreciation to all who attended and to those who generously responded to this charitable appeal.

Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Department News

This week I had a chance to speak with Jay Vander Plaat, Chief of the Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Department.

Last Monday, July 13th, the Dresden Volunteer Fire department requested the Huletts First Response team to a scene where a man taking down a tree fell over 30 feet out of the tree. He was medevac’d to Albany Medical Center and as of today is up and walking around. Chief Vander Plaat wanted everyone to know how proud he is of our community volunteers who helped to respond to this critical situation.

The HLFD fund drive is presently at 55% participation. We need to reach 60% participation in order for the “Pledge Benafactor” to make the matching contribution. If you have not made a contribution to date, please consider making one to support our community volunteers.

Next month’s Dresden Town Meeting will be held at the fire house on Monday August 10th at 7 pm. If you have not been to a Dresden town board meeting, please consider stopping by and seeing how our town government works.

Finally, on Monday July 20th, the Huletts Volunteer Fire Department conducted a successful drill with multiple hoses running water off of the Huletts tank truck with lake water throughput. This humble correspondent can report that he was successfully “saved.” Many thanks to the volunteers who came out and participated in this extremely worthwhile drill.

Bluff Headers Win the Huletts Draft Site Contest

The winners of the Huletts Fire Department’s Draft Site Contest, Jahnavi and Jhansi Bhavsar biked around and found most of the red D flags on the landing, signaling where the fire department can put their hose to the lake in case of a fire. Their Dutch cousin Xander joined them. Their prize was a Huletts Fire department hat and a special ride on the fire truck. Congratulations to the Bhavsar’s for their keen eyes!

Lynn Kapusinski to Appear on EWTN this Week

Lynn Kapusinski (right) will appear on EWTN’s Women of Grace, with host Johnnette Benkovic (left), for a 5-part interview, “When the Marriage Fails: Helping Children Cope,” from Monday July 20th through Friday July 24th, from 11:00-11:30 am EST.

I’m happy to share that Lynn recently returned from Birmingham. Alabama where she was interviewed for 5 segments on EWTN’s Women of Grace show, with Johnnette Benkovic. Her 5-part interview will air on EWTN the week of July 20th – 24th. Lynn will be discussing her new book, “When Parents Divorce or Separate: I Can Get Through This,” which recently won a first place award from the Catholic Press Association.

The Eternal Word Television Network is a cable channel originally founded by Catholic nun Mother Angelica. Lynn’s work with children who are experiencing their parent’s separation or divorce has taken her all over the world. As a child of divorce herself, she offers many practical suggestions on how to help children going through this challenging time.
