Casino Hours Thru Columbus Day

The Casino will be open Friday and Saturday nights thru Columbus Day.

Andrew and Amanda wanted everyone to know the Casino will be open on Friday and Saturday nights thru Columbus Day.

While the summer has gone by very fast, they were very happy to have made so many new friends. So please stop by for hugs and memories while the Casino is still open through Columbus Day.

Happy Labor Day

The arrival of Labor Day brings fewer children to the beach as the school year begins.

As we celebrate Labor Day with family and friends, I hope you’ll join me in remembering the hardworking men and women of American Labor who make America so great!

If you’re leaving Huletts today, drive safely and come back again soon.

LGA Assists Park Commission On Lakewide Asian Clam Survey

Three staff members from the Lake George Association – and two summer outreach interns – participated in four of the six days of the most recent Lakewide Survey for Asian Clams.

The program, in which participants sampled sandy sediment at about 200 sites on shoreline areas of Lake George looking for the invasive species, is directed by the Lake George Park Commission.

Education Director Kristen Rohne participated on three separate days, LGA Educator Jill Trunko participated on two separate days, and Communications Director Patrick Dowd participated on two separate days.

The Lake George Association commits significant resources each year on its own and in partnerships with other organizations to control and prevent the spread of aquatic and terrestrial invasive species in Lake George’s watershed. Because invasive species have no natural predators or external control, they out-compete native species for resources, growing and spreading until they completely take over an area. Those actions present a serious threat to the water quality of Lake George – and protecting Lake George’s water is the primary mission of the Lake George Association.

Education and spread prevention are the most cost-effective ways to control invasive species on Lake George, and the LGA has significant investment in both. The LGA’s broad focus on both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species aims to keep the Lake and its watershed healthy into the next century.

For results of this year’s Lakewide Survey for Asian Clams, please visit the Lake George Park Commission’s website here.

Connor Gorman has begun his career at the Naval Academy.

The Gorman family of Pickerel Bay (Parents : Tom and Jill Gorman; and Grandparents : Bob and Millie Gorman) have proudly announced the appointment and acceptance of their newly entered Midshipman, Conner Gorman, to the class of 2019 at the U.S. Naval Academy. Conner, a recent graduate of Rice Memorial High School, South Burlington, Vt, reported to duty July 1, 2015 and has just successfully completed his first very rigorous and challenging experience, ”Plebe Summer”.

Those who survived this first ordeal realize, with vivid clarity, the true meaning of Navy tradition its history, mission, purpose and motto, “Honor, Courage and Commitment”. Conner’s first year of academics as a midshipman have already begun, and his aspiration is to become a “Astrophysicist”.

Your family and friends salute you Conner, along with our best wishes and heartfelt prayers for a very successful and rewarding career at the Naval Academy.

Temporarily Down

The Huletts Current was down during the last day, as our hosting company experienced some issues. They redirected the link to their main page as they restored service.

We should now be up and running again. All in time for Labor Day weekend!

Trekonderoga in Ticonderoga September 4th & 5th

A re-creation of the Star Trek Enterprise bridge is one of the things tickets can be purchased for at a fan inspired Star Trek conference that will take place this upcoming weekend in Ticonderoga.

The first Star Trek event in Ticonderoga (billed as Trekonderoga) will take place over the Labor Day weekend.

Original Star Trek guest stars from the 1960’s show visiting the event include Sally Kellerman (second Star Trek pilot), Don Marshall (Lt. Boma in the episode “The Galileo Seven”), Barbara Luna (Marlena Moreau in the all-time classic episode “Mirror, Mirror”), Louise Sorel (Rayna Kapec in “Requiem for Methuselah”) and Sean Kenney (Captain Christopher Pike in the two-part Star Trek episode, “The Menagerie”).

Also, the original 1966 Batmobile will make an appearance in Ticonderoga on Saturday, September 5th only.

The “Star Trek” fan fest was the idea of James Cawley, a Ticonderoga native and Elvis Presley impersonator. The entire Enterprise set from the original show has been recreated in a building in Ticonderoga to use in production of fan created web episodes of the beloved show.

Consider buying some tickets and heading to Ticonderoga for a great idea this upcoming weekend!

The Ride of My Life

The interior of a classic 1978 Taylor SJ jet propelled boat.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to be taken for a ride in a 500 HP 1978 Taylor SJ jet propelled boat. It belongs to some guests of ours and, even after all these years, has only approximately 20 hours on the engine.

The owner told me he only takes it out every few years for a couple of days at a time. The rest of the time, he keeps it locked away in storage.

The boat’s throttle is actually a “gas” pedal on the floor.

We took the boat out in the early evening when the lake was flat. You’re only a few inches above the water, which I tried to capture in the picture below.

The boat has an extremely low center of gravity, sitting just inches above the water.

As we started to speed up, not having a windshield added to the overall experience of the ride. The rooster tail, which is caused by the jet pump, was impressive indeed. As we passed some island campers, we were greeted by claps and cheers.

The jet pump’s rooster tail was impressive indeed.

I was holding on for my life at this point. Although, my host told me he was always below the speed limit! After only about 5 minutes, what is left of my hair was curled up from my forehead straight back. We returned to the dock, where I was able to look at the engine.

The engine was an impressive 500 HP.

All in all, it was one of the most impressive rides I have ever taken on Lake George. The boat has now gone away for another couple of years, but I wanted to share my experience and pictures with the readers of the Huletts Current.

Congratulations Conner Gorman

After his seven weeks of intensive training, the proud parents and grandparents were able to spend a wonderful weekend at the Naval Academy with their new Midshipmen Conner.

Congratulations to Connor and the entire Gorman family!

Pictures of FHHL’s Saturday Art Auction

The Friends of Historic Huletts Landing Art Auction on Saturday night drew a crowd.

The Friends of Historic Huletts Landing annual art auction was well attended yesterday.

Many came out to support the FHHL while looking at the art contributed by local artists.

While most of the art was sold on Saturday, there are still a few items available. Anyone interested can still stop by and make a bid or leave money and note in the cash box.

Here are some of the pictures from last night.

Many thanks to all the artists who donated a piece of their work!

Steven Engelhart, Executive Director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, to Speak Thursday August 20th in Huletts

Steven Engelhart, the Executive Director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, will continue the Friends of Historic Huletts Landing (FHHL) Summer Lecture Series on Thursday, August 20th at 7:30 pm at the Mountain Grove Memorial Church.

During the late 19th century, the Adirondack Park became a mecca for sportsmen and other people seeking recreation. Native builders and architects developed a rustic style of architecture that is now known as Adirondack Architecture.

How did this style begin? What are its essential elements? Why is it so unique? All of these questions and more will be covered on Thursday evening.

Mr. Engelhart has fascinating stories on Adirondack structures – bridges, fire towers, great camps, prisons and boat houses.

Please join the Friends of Historic Huletts Landing on Thursday, August 20th at 7:30 pm at the Mountain Grove Memorial Church for this interesting and engaging talk!
