Interview with Joyce Banks: Candidate for Town Supervisor

Today, I post a candidate interview with Joyce Banks, Republican and Adirondack Fairness nominee for Dresden Town Supervisor. I provided candidate questionnaires to all those running for Town Supervisor in this year’s town election and will post their responses as received. Below are my questions and Mrs. Banks responses.

Could you please tell us about yourself and why you are running for Town Supervisor?

My name is Joyce Banks and I am a candidate for Dresden Town Supervisor in the November 3, 2015 General Election. My name will be listed under the Republican, and Adirondack Fairness Party lines on the ballot. I ask for your vote. I have been living on the Blue Goose Road since marrying my husband Bob Banks over thirty years ago. If I’m elected I will be a full time Supervisor and have a better chance to meet with more of you and better understand your cares and concerns. My husband was Town Supervisor for 20 of the last 24 years and I believe has, along with a cooperating Town Board and employees, been responsible for the Town having the lowest equalized Town Tax Rate in the County.

Washington County may be trying to get Dresden to assume more responsibility for the Washington County Beach. If you are the next Town Supervisor, how will you respond?

Well there are rules and regulations in the deed when the property was transferred to the county and I know it has to remain a public beach. I believe it is quite clear that Washington county is responsible for running it.

Town taxes went up significantly last year, where do you stand on Town tax increases in the future?

I was concerned in January when our tax bill arrived and I saw that our Town Rate increased by over 12%. I checked with the County and was told that the amount raised by taxes by the Town was in fact 17.6% higher but that the amount on the bill was lower because our assessment for a previous Workman’s Compensation claim was satisfied in the previous year. In Dresden, the Supervisor also serves as the Budget Officer, drafting the budget and tracking and submitting bills for payment in accordance with that budget. I assisted in that task for my husband once my two boys were in college.

Are there any things you would like to see happening in Dresden in the future?

I kind of like Dresden the way it is. It’s quiet and it would be nice to have some industry but we can’t because of the APA. I’d like to see more high speed Internet and if elected I would do all in my power to improve high speed service if I’m able to.

As a prospective Town official, what do you consider your greatest strengths?

I pride myself on my common sense and logic and am always willing to listen and learn from members of the community and the Town Board. I’m a good listener and I’m honest. We have to try to keep our spending under control and not spend beyond our means. Besides serving as chief financial and executive officer of the Town, the Town Supervisor serves on the County Board of Supervisors and is the voice of Town on that body. I believe that I can work with the county agencies and administrators to get the best cooperation and coordination between the Town and County. Dresden is a small town and should act and spend like a small and responsible town with all of us pulling together on November 3 to keep our spending down and use common sense and logic to provide for all our residents.

Editor’s note: I would like to thank Mrs. Banks for her responses. Interview questions and answers are published in the order in which they are received.

For All New York Baseball Fans

California Rep. Adam Schiff and New York Rep. Steve Israel made a wager on the Mets-Dodgers NLDS. Schiff wagered gourmet popcorn from California while Israel wagered New York bagels. The loser was also required to make a one minute speech on the House Floor praising the winning team.

The NY Mets went on to beat the Dodgers in five games. Schiff made good on losing the bet by singing “Meet the Mets” on Friday afternoon.

For all of our Mets fans – enjoy!

Gate to Washington County Beach to be Opened During Offseason

The entrance of the Washington County Beach.

Supervisor Gang informs me that Washington County has agreed to leave the gate opened at the Washington County Public Beach over the winter. This is the same policy that has been in effect as before.

The gate will be open on November 1st until sometime in the Spring.

The three fire departments, Dresden, Huletts and Whitehall, also will have keys to the gate so that they can get into the parking area at anytime for practice or water refilling.

Dier Elected To Lead LGA Board of Directors

Lake George native Mike Dier has been elected president of the Lake George Association’s Board of Directors.

“I am honored to become President of the Lake George Association’s Board of Directors, and look forward to working with our talented and effective staff and our engaged board members to continue the LGA’s important work,” Dier said.

“Mike has been involved in the Lake George Association for many years, most recently as our Executive Vice President.” said C. Walter Lender, Executive Director of the Lake George Association. “His love for the Lake is clear to anyone who has worked with him, and his energy and drive will help to continue our work protecting Lake George water and educating for the future.”

Dier, who now lives in Queensbury, said it is crucial for the LGA to focus on new and future partnerships whenever possible. “In recent years we’ve seen a strong sense of cooperation develop between the Lake George Association and municipalities, Warren County Soil and Water, the other nonprofits, and the regulatory agencies like the Lake George Park Commission that work in the Lake George watershed,” Dier said. “That regular cooperation is beneficial for the health of the Lake. In many cases, we can do so much more together than we could separately.”

“We are looking forward to continuing that cooperation so that critical Lake-Saving Projects – on our own and with our partners – will proceed in sustaining Lake George’s water quality,” he added.

Along with Dier, the LGA Board of Directors elected Cheryl Lamb as Executive Vice President and Daniel Behan, Jr., as Treasurer.

Lamb was re-elected to the LGA Board of Directors in August at its Annual Meeting. She and her husband, Buzz, are the former owners of Norowal Marina in Bolton Landing.

Behan is a project manager for Saratoga Prime Properties and has 25 years of experience in marina management and development, including the Harris Bay Yacht Club in Cleverdale and the Bolton Landing Marina.

Cathy LaBombard was re-elected as Secretary, and Dan Davies and Bill Dutcher were re-elected as Vice Presidents. Former Board President Victor Hershaft will remain involved with the LGA as the past president. “I am honored to continue working for the Lake George Association in a formal capacity,” Hershaft said, “and I am pleased to see that the Board has chosen Mike as our President. He is eminently qualified to keep the protection of Lake George moving forward.”

Dier grew up in (and on) Lake George with swimming, boating and camping as some of his earliest memories. “I know now that the accomplishments of the Lake George Association and its partners are why we were able to enjoy the lake then, and why we are able to enjoy it now.” “I got involved in the LGA because I saw that it was an organization of action – real, in the-ground action that makes significant differences in the protection of water quality in Lake George,” Dier said. “What’s also important is that the Lake George Association accomplishes that delicate balance of respecting the Lake’s needs and respecting the needs of the various users. It’s not easy to do, but it is important. We are all fortunate to be able to have and use Lake George – a resource that the LGA’s been preserving for more than a century,” he said

Columbus Day Weekend Recap

The children’s costume parade has become an annual tradition during the Columbus Day weekend.

Many thanks to all those volunteers who made the Columbus Day weekend so spectacular. From the children’s parade, the festivities in the Casino, to the birthday party for Ed and all the other “goings-on” around the Landing, this was certainly a Columbus Day to remember. The colors just began getting vibrant as the weekend ended. So please consider this a heartfelt goodbye until we see each other again in 2016! Please stay healthy as the weather starts getting colder.

Trailer for Whitehall Bigfoot Documentary Released

August, 1976: Three teens driving on an isolated stretch of road somewhere in the Adirondacks of Upstate New York have a brush with a bizarre creature. Standing over 7 feet tall and covered in hair, they referred to it as a “beast”. Hours later, Abair Road was crawling with local and state police. Many of them recounted seeing the creature, as well.

As the weeks and months passed more individuals came forward with their own sightings. The “Abair Incident” became the impetus for a rash of sightings around the town of Whitehall that continue to this day. Today, Whitehall is frequently referred to as “the Bigfoot Capitol of the East Coast”.

Now, a film has been made about the Abair Incident. The studio behind indie hit, Minerva Monster, has set out to tell the Whitehall story as it never has been before. Featuring interviews with witnesses and local figures, Beast of Whitehall highlights one of the single most important stories in Bigfoot lore.

The full length documentary is scheduled for release in 2016.

“Late in his career, marine artist Edward Moran (1828-1901) became influenced by the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s first voyage. He did several large painting of the voyage. The artist has chosen the brilliant spectacle of Columbus with cross uplifted, in magnificent regalia of scarlet and gold and purple, and his officers with the standards of Castile and Leon, and the white and green colors of the expedition, disembarking with his men when his hopes had become a reality, for the purpose of claiming the newly discovered land.”

Today, October 12, 2015 is the 523rd anniversary of Columbus’s landing. Enjoy the federal holiday, if you have off!
