2015 LGPC Boat Inspection Program – Final Report

Lake George Friends and Partners,

Attached, please find the Lake George Park Commission’s 2015 Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program Final Report. This report concluded the two-year pilot mandatory trailered boat inspection program for Lake George, and details both how the program was administered and its outcomes. This program simply would not have been possible without the tremendous support of our many partners, both state and local, who have provided the funding necessary to make this program a reality. The Commission believes that this program has been a success in working to protect Lake George, and this effort has been broadly supported by both the users of the lake and the public in general. A recent Sienna Research Institute poll of recreational users of the lake noted that “96% of respondents rated this program as important or very important in protecting Lake George.” We owe a considerable debt to the dozens of organizations and passionate individuals who have helped shape this program into one that does not impact boater use of Lake George while still providing for strong protection. In fact, boater registrations on Lake George have actually increased over the two years of this pilot program. Thanks to our funding partners, there has been no cost to boaters on Lake George for either the inspection or a decontamination if required. We believe this is the best model achievable, and will work to maintain this key element to the program.

Looking to the future, the Commission is currently working to make this initiative a permanent program on Lake George. It will take continued support and diligence from all of our collective agencies and organizations to do so, but we believe that given what’s at stake, this support will continue for the long-term.

I invite you to take a look at this report to get a broader understanding of the outcomes of this aquatic invasive species prevention effort. Please feel free to share this with anyone who you think will be interested. We are always open to new ideas and thoughts for improvement, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Commission at any time with your thoughts and ideas.

Working collectively we also had a very aggressive year in addressing the Eurasian watermilfoil issue in Lake George, and you can find a comprehensive 2015 Milfoil Control Final Report on our website at www.lgpc.state.ny.us.

Wishing you the best in 2016,

Top News Story of Huletts: 2015

A “road closed” / detour sign was in place for three months as the Eichlerville bridge was worked on in 2015.

Since I’ve been writing here on the Huletts Current, I’ve gotten in the habit of recapping at the end of the year what I consider to be the top news story of Huletts Landing from the past year. This is sometimes obvious, sometimes it is not.

This year, the biggest “story,” in my opinion, was the rebuilding of the “Eichlerville” bridge which took a number of months, and the repaving of County Route 6. In other words, the bridge and roads took center stage in 2015. I realized I took the most pictures of those events during 2015, many of which I post here. While many things happened in Huletts during 2015, the work on the bridge and roads was indeed significant.

So for 2015, I’ve selected the the rebuilding of the “Eichlerville” bridge, and the repaving of County Route 6 (which were actually two different events but tremendously significant to travel throughout the community) as the: Top News Story of Huletts for 2015.

The abutments from the “old” bridge were in rough shape after over 100 years of use.

The new abutments were brought in individually and joined on site.

Great care was taken to protect the environment as the new bridge was constructed.

Work progressed slowly but methodically.

The cross pieces were brought in near the end.

Finally, the bridge had to be joined to the existing private road.

The “new” Eichlerville bridge as it looked upon completion.

Also in 2015, Washington County repaved County Route 6 right past the Huletts Post Office.

This work was significant and also much needed.

Pictures from the 2015 Dresden Christmas Party

Santa Claus stopped by this year’s Dresden Christmas party.

The children of Dresden were treated to a town-wide Christmas party on Saturday December 19th, in the Dresden Town hall. Over 60 people attended.

A very special thank you to Linda Barber – Every year, Linda donates her time to help Santa send out the invitations, buy and wrap the presents, set up the refreshment table and so much more, so all the children in the Town can have a wonderful party!!!

Below are some pictures from the event.

Santa stopped by on his way from the north pole. (Looking very much like Town Councilman John Barber.)

Town Supervisor, George Gang (who was very nice this year), introduced Santa.

All children who attended received a present.

Justice of the Peace, the Honorable Jack Eggleston reading the “Night Before Christmas” to the children.

Surprises awaited all the children.

A fun day was had by all.

Over 60 people attended.

Delicious food was available for all.

Many thanks to Sue Foster Ives for providing the above photos. (Click to see full-scale.)

Rare French Painting Joins Fort Ticonderoga Museum Collection

Image of the Fort Ticonderoga Museum’s newest acquisition, one of the very few surviving contemporary images of French regiments that saw service in North America.(Click image to see full-scale.)

Fort Ticonderoga is thrilled to announce the recent acquisition of an important painting of the French military on campaign from the mid-18th century. The work depicts a French regiment camped in hilly terrain of the Italian Piedmont during the final campaigns of the 1740-1748 War of Austrian Succession. This painting is an internationally significant addition to the museum’s collection and an important document of military and material culture during the Ancient Regime with a direct connection to the French soldiers that built and served at Fort Carillon (later named Ticonderoga) during the French and Indian War (1754-1763).

The campaign depicted in the painting involved French forces advancing into Northern Italy. These French troops suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of numerically inferior Piedmontese troops at the Battle of l’Assietta. The Marquis de Montcalm also served during the campaign depicted in the painting, where he was wounded during the battle, his final field command prior to his service in Canada. The painting represents the camp of the Royal Roussillon Regiment, identifiable by their uniforms which follow the January 19, 1747 regulations. This regiment later served and wore the same uniforms at Fort Carillon from 1756-1758, including the climactic battle on July 8, 1758, making this one of the very few surviving contemporary images of French regiments that saw service in North America.

This painting serves not only as a detailed glimpse into a French military encampment, but represents a campaign that may have served as a lesson for the Marquis de Montcalm of how a small, well-entrenched force could defeat a much larger army. The lopsided victory at l’Assietta in 1747 shares some striking similarities with the later battle at Ticonderoga in 1758, including the presence of Montcalm as well as four of the infantry regiments that had fought in Italy, one depicted in this painting.

“The intricate detail of the painting is a remarkable window into daily life in the French military,” said Fort Ticonderoga’s Curator Matthew Keagle. “It illustrates in full color many of the details of camp life depicted in the engravings of military manuals in the Fort Ticonderoga Museum’s library collection. The level of detail allows the identification of numerous examples of objects from soldiers’ muskets to powder horns to eating utensils that match examples recovered archeologically at Fort Ticonderoga.”

Fort Ticonderoga holds one of North America’s premier collections of 18th-century military material culture. This painting adds immensely to the museum’s holding of French material. Exhibits across the museum’s campus contain thousands of objects and tell thousands of stories, narrating the history of Fort Ticonderoga from the military culture of the 18th century to the reconstruction of the fort in the 20th century. The painting will be on display during the museum’s 2016 season in the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center

Saturday Quote

Too Many Daves
by Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel)

Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did. And that wasn’t a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one and calls out, “Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave!” she doesn’t get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!
This makes things quite difficult at the McCaves’
As you can imagine, with so many Daves.
And often she wishes that, when they were born,
She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn
And one of them Hoos-Foos. And one of them Snimm.
And one of them Hot-Shot. And one Sunny Jim.
And one of them Shadrack. And one of them Blinkey.
And one of them Stuffy. And one of them Stinkey.
Another one Putt-Putt. Another one Moon Face.
Another one Marvin O’Gravel Balloon Face.
And one of them Ziggy. And one Soggy Muff.
One Buffalo Bill. And one Biffalo Buff.
And one of them Sneepy. And one Weepy Weed.
And one Paris Garters. And one Harris Tweed.
And one of them Sir Michael Carmichael Zutt
And one of them Oliver Boliver Butt
And one of them Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate …
But she didn’t do it. And now it’s too late.

Pictures from the 2015 Huletts Christmas Party

The Huletts firehouse as it looked for the 2015 Christmas party on Saturday night.

The Huletts Landing community was treated to another spectacular Christmas gala celebration on Saturday evening, December 5th, at the Huletts Landing firehouse.

The firehouse was, once again, magically transformed into a wonderfully decorated Christmas venue with twinkling trees, bright lights, holiday music and all things shinny and bright. The event saw a new record attendance, which included HLVFC members and their families, friends and neighbors of the Landing, invited firefighters, first responders and EMT members from neighboring communities who had frequently answered the call this year for aid and assistance during emergencies in Huletts Landing, and Dresden Town Supervisor, George Gang.

Many thanks to HLVFC President John DeLucia, Fire Chief Jay VanderPlaat and the outstanding support team of “Santa’s Helpers” that planned and carried out all of the activities that made this an enjoyable night of great fun and entertainment. The Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Company would like to extend its sincerest thanks and appreciation to its valued supporters in the community for their very generous response to the Company’s fund drive this year, and sends along it’s best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2016.

Correction: John DeLucia is the current President of HLVFC. Mr. DeLucia took over for Luke Smith this past October. I wrongly cited Mr. Smith as President of the HLVFC in my original post. My apologies for the mistake.
