A large crowd enjoyed the classic rock sound of the band, Hungry Crows, at the Huletts Casino on Saturday night, August 12th. For those born in the 1950s and ’60s, it was good to hear some of the tunes we grew up with again!
Theresa Kapusinski
I’m sorry to have to say that my step-mother, Theresa Kapusinski, passed away this past weekend from a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Theresa was last in Huletts in 2010 when my father died. She was a shy, quiet person who never sought any attention. In one of my last conversations with her – she told me she was praying for “everyone in the community.” I list her obituary at the bottom of this post.
“May God support us all the day long, till the shades lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in His mercy may He give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest and peace at the last.”
THERESA (TAFURI) KAPUSINSKI, 77, of Salisbury, MD, and formerly of Cedar Grove, NJ, and Huletts Landing, NY, died Saturday, August 12, 2017 in Salisbury, Maryland after a brief illness.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of Nicholas and Ida Tafuri. Her father, Nicholas Tafuri, was a renowned artist and animator of the popular cartoon character, Popeye the Sailor for King Features studios. Mrs. Kapusinski held a Master’s Degree in Theology from Mundelein College in Chicago.
She served as a Franciscan sister for 20+ years, helping the communities of Midland / Big Spring of West Texas. She had a love of simplicity and felt called to help the poor and those most in need. She was a teacher and worked with abused women. After leaving her religious order to “grow and serve others,” Theresa worked as a religion teacher at Saint Aloysius Academy in Bayonne, NJ and later at Lacordaire Academy in Montclair NJ. She finished her career as a Professor of World Religions at Caldwell University in Caldwell, NJ.
She married Dr. Albert T. Kapusinski in 1987 and was devoted to him and her local community. After they retired and moved to Salisbury, Maryland, Theresa was active in many church and civic groups.
Theresa was a caring, sensitive person who readily shared her faith with others. She was always willing to listen and help those in need.
Theresa is preceded in death by her late husband, Dr. Albert T. Kapusinski. She is survived by three stepsons, Albert J. (Elyse) Kapusinski, George (Lynn) Kapusinski, and Frank (Doreen) Kapusinski and two step-grandchildren: Margot and Gwendolyn. She is also survived by her brother, Anthony (Loretta) Tafuri and niece, Lenora.
A local memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ellen Apperson Brown, spoke about her new book, John Apperson’s Lake George, in front of a good-sized crowd on Wednesday for the Friends of Historic Huletts Landing summer lecture series.
She spoke in-depth about John Apperson’s many accomplishments including:
1. Rip-rapping shores of islands including getting a bond issue passed for for $10,000 in 1917
2. Removing illegal squatters from state islands
3. Promoting camping and other forms of recreation at Lake George
4. Taking photographs; Giving talks with slides; publishing pamphlets
5. Making friends… including FDR, Al Smith, George Foster Peabody, etc.
6. Blowing the Whistle…Making enemies…including Robert Moses
7. Giving talks to civic organizations
8. Joining organizations…and forming new ones, including the Lake George Protective Association and the New York Forest Preserve Association
9. Developing neighborhood associations (in Huddle Bay and Turtle Bay)
10. Protecting, and eventually purchasing, Dome Island ( 1939); then donating it to the Nature Conservancy (1956)
Many thanks to Ms. Apperson Brown for taking the time to visit Huletts Landing and share the important historical and environmental accomplishments of her great uncle.

The Friends of Historic Huletts Landing summer lecture series continues on Wednesday August 9th at the Mountain Grove Memorial Church at 7:30 pm. Ellen Apperson Brown will speak about her new book, John Apperson’s Lake George.

Pat and Irene McNelis celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends in Huletts Landing.
Many congratulations were given to Pat and Irene McNelis as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends in the Huletts Casino on Friday evening. A large crowd turned out to honor this remarkable couple. Everyone enjoyed the evening of fun which included toasts and remarks by family members. Mr. McNelis concluded with a heartfelt talk which included a remembrance of the first time the couple came to Huletts Landing in 1958.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. McNelis and their family. You are loved by many!
A large crowd turned out for the wine and cheese fundraiser held in mid-July by the Huletts Landing Women’s Guild.
The annual wine and cheese fundraiser for the Outreach Program was held on Friday, July 14, at the Washington County Park Pavilion by the Huletts Landing Women’s Guild. The fundraiser was a great success thanks to all the residence and guests who supported the event. The proceeds will enable the Outreach Program to provide help to the needy.
Participants enjoyed an evening of wine, hors d’oeuvres, music and fun conversation surrounded by a flair of Adirondack ambience.
The tables were decorated beautifully.
Thank you to the many volunteers on the committee for their teamwork in creating such an enjoyable gathering. It was an evening to remember. Also a special thanks to Bruce Young for sharing his hunting treasurers from escapades around the world. They were a focal point for every table.

On Sunday 7/30/2017 around 1:00 a.m. the Huletts Landing fire whistle blew and pagers went off with a message that there was an explosion at a home on Bluff Head road that blew a hole in the floor and is creating a heavy smoke condition. Huletts, Dresden, Whitehall and Putnam Fire Departments along with Skeensboro EMS all responding.
I’m happy to report that the smoke was actually steam, and the hole was in the kitchen wall (not the floor), which cleared the kitchen counter top of everything on it. The cause was a furnace that failed to shut off and ruptured the main cast iron hot water line.
The occupants will testify that the whole house shook from the explosion, with all the items on the kitchen counter crashing to the floor.
The renters are to be applauded for exiting the home in a safe and organized manner. There were two ways out so they didn’t have to walk thru the broken bottles on the kitchen floor They assembled in a safe place, accounted for each other and made that information readily available when we arrived.
From every call we try to learn something, we drill so certain actions become automatic in the face of danger, it makes us better. So the question I have for the community is:
Do you have two ways out of your residence, practice fire drills in your homes, advise any renters or children on how to get out, account for each other, and assemble together in a safe place? Be sure to check your smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. Proper planning saves lives.
Please thank your firemen for their healthy hearts and bravery for running toward the danger without hesitation from a sound sleep in the middle of the night. I am so proud to be 1 of 30 of this community service organization. Most of all, thank you for your support.

On Wednesday, July 26th, at about 7:30 pm, people started noticing that there was no cell or land-line phone service in the Landing. All internet traffic was also cut off. To be blunt – this was a serious communication and safety issue. No phone or internet service at all in the entire landing.
The Huletts Landing Volunteer fire department opened the fire house doors, put a fire engine out by the street with a sign and manned the fire house from 8:00 pm until midnight. They had a sign-up sheet that would take us thru the next day with firemen on call continuously. Our only means of communication with the 911 desk in Fort Edward for fire and medical emergencies was by radio on the fire engine. I hope the community saw or realized what to do in case of an emergency.
Huletts Landing is served by a Verizon fiber optic cable that was compromised (most likely by an animal) somewhere close to or in Whitehall.
So the “bottom line” is when our fiber optic line gets compromised, we quickly realize how rural we are. Our cell tower communicates with the outside world the same way our house phones do.
So many thanks go out to our Fire Chief, Jay VanderPlaat, and all the dedicated volunteers of the Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire department. Please thank your fireman (who is also your neighbor) for their commitment to public safety and for all they do for all of us!

This is a reminder that the men’s golf outings continue on Thursday mornings.
The group meets most Thursday morning at 9:00 a m (…weather permitting !) at the “Caddy Shack”. Those wanting to participate will find a “Sign Up Sheet” posted on the “Bulletin Board.” All players must arrive before the start time of 9:00 a.m. For players who are not members of the registered Huletts Landing Golf community, the greens fee for the round is $10.00.
It is always a fun morning and the post game camaraderie is always filled with humorous and exciting antics like determining who the “Winners and Losers” were and how many “Quarter” penalty fines were levied by the benevolent “Commissioner!”
So please consider joining the other fellows of the Landing. You will hopefully find the experience both enjoyable and rewarding.
