The minutes from the September 2017 Dresden Town Board meeting were recently approved and have been posted on the town’s website.
The October minutes will not be approved until November and so on.
The movie, Last of the Mohicans, with Randolph Scott and Binnie Barnes, was one of the movies shown in the Casino on “Family Movie Night” in the 1950’s.
During the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s family movie night was a staple in the Casino. Movies such as: Cheaper by the Dozen, Robin Hood, Last of the Mohicans (the 1936 edition), and many Disney classics were enjoyed by many. I remember my parents ordering the films from a catalog and running off the mimeographed sheets advertising these. I recently came across a copy of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and remembered watching it in the Casino as a child.
If you have any favorite movies you remember seeing in the Casino during family movie night or memories you wouldn’t mind sharing here, I’d appreciate hearing from you.
A state helicopter lands on Black Mountain on Sunday, October 8th, rescuing an injured hiker.
On Sunday, October 8, 2017, the Huletts Landing EMS responded to a mutual aid request from Dresden at 4:24 PM. A male hiker had fallen on the Black Mountain trail about 300 yards from the summit and broke his leg. A group from our fire company responded, including Jim Leghorn and Bill Clough climbing up the mountain to rescue the hiker.

A forest ranger helicopter made a difficult landing at the summit and then transported the patient to the Glens Falls Hospital. Jim, Bill, several Dresden firemen, and a State Trooper are to be commended for making the difficult climb up the mountain to perform the rescue, then hiking back down in the darkness while carrying a heavy stretcher and supplies.

Children stand in their costumes before the start of this year’s Halloween parade.
This year’s Halloween parade was oodles’s of fun as the pictures here demonstrate. Although the early part of the day served up a gloomy helping of cloudy and rainy weather, Mother Nature blessed us with bright skies and sunshine for the actual parade featuring the Landing’s children, in their colorful costumes.
The children were treated to free ice cream at the soda fountain at the parade’s end. Many thanks to the ice cream dispensers who tirelessly scooped on and until all cones were fully filled!

The 18th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship took place in Newry, Maine, on Saturday. The contestants raced each other over a 278 yard obstacle course, in which husbands waded through water and clambered over hurdles while carrying their wives.
This year’s winners were Kirsten and Jake Barney from Lexington, Virginia. The first-placed pair won beer totaling Kirsten’s weight, and an entry into the World Championship, which takes place in Finland the following summer.
Election day will be November 7th this year. Over the next few weeks, the Huletts Current will spotlight some local elections as well as some ballot proposals. Today, Ballot proposal # 3 is explained.
The NY State Senate gave the required second passage to a proposed New York State Constitutional amendment to create a 250-acre Forest Preserve Health and Safety Land Account for the Adirondack and Catskill parks. It will now appear on the November 7th ballot as Proposal # 3.
New York State’s Constitution protects the State’s forest preserve as wild forest land and generally prohibits the lease, sale, exchange, or taking of any forest preserve land. The proposed amendment will create two new exceptions to this broad protection of the forest preserve to make it easier for municipalities to undertake certain health and safety projects.
First, the proposed amendment will create a land account of up to 250 acres of forest preserve land. A town, village, or county can apply to the land account if it has no viable alternative to using forest preserve land for specified health and safety purposes. These purposes are (1) to address bridge hazards or safety on specified highways; (2) to eliminate the hazards of dangerous curves and grades on specified highways; (3) to relocate, reconstruct, and maintain highways; and (4) for water wells and necessary related accessories located within 530 feet of a specified highway, where needed to meet drinking water quality standards. The State will acquire 250 acres to add to the forest preserve to replace the land placed in the health and safety land account, subject to approval by the Legislature.
Second, the proposed amendment will allow bicycle paths and types of public utility lines to be located within the widths of specified highways that cross forest preserve land. The work on the bicycle paths and utility lines must minimize the removal of trees and vegetation. The proposed amendment will allow a stabilization device (such as a guy wire) for an existing utility pole to be located near the width of a highway when necessary to ensure public health and safety and when no other viable option exists. The proposed amendment prohibits the construction of a new intrastate gas or oil pipeline that did not receive necessary state and local permits and approvals by June 1, 2016.
Washington county would be one of the counties eligible to use the Proposal 3 land bank.
A “yes” vote supporting this amendment would: create a 250-acre land bank, which would allow local governments to request state Forest Preserve land for qualifying projects in exchange for the state adding 250 new acres to the preserve; and allow bike paths, sewer lines, and utility lines within the width of highways on preserve land.
A “no” vote opposes this amendment to:
create a 250-acre state Forest Preserve land bank; and allow bike paths, sewer lines, and utility lines within the width of highways on preserve land.
Megan Kennelly and Greg Leonardi
Congratulations to Megan Kennelly and Greg Leonardi who were married on Saturday, September 23, 2017 in Huletts Landing.
Many relatives and friends of the large Lancaster/Kennelly and Leonardi families were able to attend. The happy couple exchanged their vows on the point, which once contained the original dock for Huletts Landing. A lively and fun reception followed at the HLPOCA Pavilion. The dance floor was filled with family and friends.
The sun shined brightly throughout the afternoon and the reception continued into the night where the couple danced their first dance on the beautiful shores of Lake George and finished the night by jumping off the dock, gown and all.
For the Columbus Day weekend, the Casino will be open from 9 pm to close on Friday and Saturday nights. .
The Halloween party will happen on Saturday night, beginning around 10:00 pm. DJ, Paul Ferguson, will be taking music requests. Come early in your best costume and enjoy the party. 😉

The scene of the truck rollover accident the morning of September 15th.
On September 15, 2017, the Huletts Landing Volunteer Fire Department responded to gravel truck rollover accident at the bottom of the Huletts hill on County Rt. 6 in Huletts Landing. The alarm sounded at approximately 8:40 a.m. in the morning. A significantly sized gravel truck, making a local delivery, rolled over at the bottom of the Huletts hill at the intersection of County Rt 6 and 6B. Thankfully there were no serious injuries, although the driver of the truck required medical assistance, initially provided by our HLVFC first responders.
The first responders stabilized the driver until the Skenesborough EMS team arrived at the scene. The victim was subsequently transported to the hospital for further medical evaluation. Both the Dresden Fire Company and units of the New York State Police were also at the scene. The front porch of the home adjacent to the scene of the accident sustained some damage from the wave of gravel spilling from the truck. Luckily at the time of the accident there were no vehicle or pedestrian activity at that crossroads, otherwise this incident could have had much greater tragic results. Many thanks to our Fire Company members for their quick response and for remaining on duty, well over four hours, for the major cleanup they performed in restoring the roadway back to safe passage.
On Friday morning September 15th, a truck carrying crushed stone overturned at the base of the mountain. The driver apparently lost brakes and could not stop at bottom of the mountain. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance with a head injury. The road opened later in the day. Luckily no one else was hurt.
