Two Great Guys Honored

Long time golf course volunteers Bob Quick and Bernie Derencin were honored after the Skip Linhart Memorial Golf Tournament with special signs that will hang on Skip’s Shack commemorating their work.

Sometimes words simply cannot express the admiration and appreciation that a community holds for the hard work and dedication of certain people.

That’s why golf course volunteers, Bob Quick and Bernie Derencin, were honored on Saturday, August 22nd, with a proclamation that the day would be known as Bob & Bernie’s Day and both were presented with special signs that would forever more bear testimony to their countless hours spent maintaining the Huletts Golf Course.

These signs will hang permanently on Skip’s Shack as a remembrance of the countless hours through all the years both have worked to maintain this special treasure.

Pat McNelis spoke for the community with heartfelt remarks honoring both Bob and Bernie. Here is a copy of Mr. McNelis’ remarks for those who were unable to attend. Words simply cannot convey the appreciation felt for these two great guys, but Mr. McNelis’ remarks say it best.

In another indication that Skip Linhart was smiling down on the entire day, longtime Huletts resident, Gary Hurley, hit a hole-in-one on the 6th hole during the Skip Linhart Memorial Golf Tournament. “I hit it, and it bounced once and went into the hole,” exclaimed Gary. Congratulations to Gary on one well hit shot!

It was the type of day that shows how special a place Huletts truly is. Bob and Bernie’s Day. One great day, two great guys!

Sign Time

George Reis tested his boat, El Lagarto, (The Lizard) in Lake George before winning the Gold Cup for three consecutive years in the 1930’s. A sign marks the spot where he lived, on the road that leads to the Sagamore resort.

The Gold Cup is the oldest active trophy in all of motorboat racing. Bolton Landing resident, George Reis, would capture the Gold Cup in 1933, 1934, and 1935 in a boat he tested on Lake George. The Lizard flew by Huletts Landing while it was being tested, in route to trouncing the competition in those years.

In another little known fact about the Gold Cup, boat designer Christopher Columbus Smith (of the Chris Craft boat company) captured the Gold Cup in 1915 in a boat that topped the elusive 60 miles-per-hour speed barrier.

Good Samaritans Help Survivors of Dresden Car Wreck

The Post Star reports here on a bad car crash that took place on Route 22 in Dresden. I spoke to some at the scene and from what I can gather, it was quite a bad wreck. A helicopter was brought in to air-lift the survivors out. Everyone who stopped and helped should be commended.

Two Indian Warriors Overlooking Lake George

This is a really cool painting entitled “Life and Death” by artist Robert Griffing. These two Indian warriors are scouting Lake George. The Iroquois and Algonquin tribes competed viciously in this area and this picture caught my attention.

I’ll be doing more on the Indians this winter but this painting really captures what they must have looked like. I wouldn’t want to run into these dudes walking through the woods.

Off to the Races

A large contingent of Hulett’s residents boarded a bus in front of the Post Office this morning, to spend a day at the race track in Saratoga.

One small piece of advice for all those headed to Saratoga today; quit while you’re ahead! (and have a great time!!)

Seeing the Big Dipper & North Star

With the clear August nights we’ve been having, I thought this video on how to find the “Big Dipper” and the North Star would be interesting.

You can spot the “Big Dipper” at this time of the year from Huletts, by looking across the lake in the evening between Deer’s Leap and Sabbath Day Point. This video gives some background info and how to find the North Star once you’ve located the Big Dipper.

Alleged Fire Sighting Causes False Alarm

The Huletts Volunteer Fire Department received a warning from fire control late this afternoon, that someone across the lake allegedly saw smoke somewhere on the mountain coming into Huletts.

After 3 hours of searching by both the Huletts and Dresden fire companies, no fire was found. The old axiom, “better safe than sorry”, certainly applied here.

Our thanks go out to all the volunteer firemen who spent hours searching the steep woods of the mountain.

New BOOK DROP at the Huletts Gallery & Library

The Huletts Gallery and Library has added a BOOK DROP for returns and donations, located conveniently in the overhead door to the equipment bay along Lands End Road. We can thank longtime resident Ira Doell for the good work of making and installing it.

The Gallery hopes that the new BOOK DROP will increase library usage by making returns more convenient, effectively extending the library hours.

Visitors and residents leaving the landing can also drop off books they no longer need to add to the Library collection. Shelf space was doubled from last year, so there is now plenty of space. The bulk of the collection is popular paperback, but it is hoped that more hardcover and books on area history will be added over time. The Library asks that any rare or high value books be left during regular library hours to avoid the risk of any damage in the drop.

A new door has been added at the rear of the building to make access easier via a gravel path on either side of the building.

The Library is staffed by the Ladies Guild of the Mountain Grove Memorial Church. Volunteers are sought to help man the library, and it is hoped that in 2010 there will be sufficient volunteers and interest to allow a third day.

The Gallery and Library is free to all residents, renters, and visitors and no registration is required (there is a register if you care to sign in). Visitors are encouraged to browse both the book stacks and the exhibits, currently large format reproductions of vintage postcards and some old photographs from the Huletts Area.

Regular hours are 10:00 to 12:00 Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the Summer.
