It Beat the Hare?

On a trip over to Whitehall, I saw this turtle on the side of the road.

So I jammed on the brakes, grabbed my camera, jumped out of the car, and endured my wife yelling; “what are you doing!”, only to realize that the turtle hadn’t moved at all. So here is the closeup of our slow moving friend.

So after this shot, we left it there and would you believe, it was in the same spot when we returned home!

How it out-raced a hare, I’ll never know.

Cathy Aiken: Cover Girl

The Colon Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of colorectal cancer in out-of-the-box ways. Its goals are to educate as many people as possible, as early as possible, about the risk factors and symptoms of colorectal cancer, and for people to get screened when it’s appropriate for them.

The yearly “Colondar” Calendar is once again sure to raise eyebrows and awareness with beautiful images of strong and vibrant survivors of colorectal cancer – all diagnosed under the stereotypical age of 50. By showing off their scars and sharing their extraordinary personal stories, they are giving hope while saving lives and teaching about colorectal cancer in an unexpected way.

This year, come and meet the Colondar’s newest model, Cathy Aiken, at the Casino on Sunday, September 6th at 11:00 a.m. for brunch!

Inside a Beaver House

As you pass the pond on top of the mountain, you’ll see a beaver’s nest on the far side.

The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake has a number of great exhibits. When I was there recently, I took a shot of this three-dimensional display which shows what the inside of a beaver’s nest looks like (Click on this picture to see it in full screen.).

The entrance is actually underwater and the beavers swim into it from below. The mud and sticks form a protective cover which hardens almost like cement. So now you know what the inside of a beaver’s house looks like.

What Henry Hudson Saw

Lincoln in High-Def

This is a newly restored high definition picture of Abraham Lincoln shortly before he was assassinated. Click on the “full size” link below the picture. This is truly remarkable. The suffering that he had to deal with is fully evident in his eyes and he certainly looks tired. It’s also interesting because people think of him as dark-skinned, and thus dark-eyed. His contemporaries, however, always remarked upon his “grey” eyes. You can clearly see that in this picture. Fascinating. Check it out.

R.I.P. Edward Kennedy

February 22, 1932 – August 25, 2009

The Kennedy’s have many connections to Huletts Landing so I thought I would tell of my one brief encounter with Sen. Edward Kennedy.

During a short period when I worked on Capitol Hill, I attended a church named St. Joseph’s. Here is a picture of the entrance. It is located right across the street from the Senate Hart Office Building.

One day at Mass, I was sitting toward the front, and at the sign of peace, I turned around to shake hands with whomever was behind me and Senator Kennedy was standing there in the pew behind me with his hand outstretched to greet mine. Well, I must have given him a surprised look but I did say; “peace be with you” and his reply was the same. I wanted to say hello when Mass was over but when I turned around when Mass had ended, he had already gone.

So today on Senator Kennedy’s passing, I hope he finds eternal rest and peace. I never had a chance to say hello, and all we did was offer each other a simple greeting of peace. However, this brief exchange on life’s journey is something I will never forget. Peace be with you Senator Kennedy.
