The Kennedy’s have many connections to Huletts Landing so I thought I would tell of my one brief encounter with Sen. Edward Kennedy.
During a short period when I worked on Capitol Hill, I attended a church named St. Joseph’s. Here is a picture of the entrance. It is located right across the street from the Senate Hart Office Building.
One day at Mass, I was sitting toward the front, and at the sign of peace, I turned around to shake hands with whomever was behind me and Senator Kennedy was standing there in the pew behind me with his hand outstretched to greet mine. Well, I must have given him a surprised look but I did say; “peace be with you” and his reply was the same. I wanted to say hello when Mass was over but when I turned around when Mass had ended, he had already gone.
So today on Senator Kennedy’s passing, I hope he finds eternal rest and peace. I never had a chance to say hello, and all we did was offer each other a simple greeting of peace. However, this brief exchange on life’s journey is something I will never forget. Peace be with you Senator Kennedy.
